| Summary | | Pesher Nahum is preserved in a single copy, 4Q169 (4QpNah), dated to the 1 st century BCE. The five extant columns of the work contain citations of Nah 1:3-6, 2:12-14, and 3:1-14, accompanied by contemporizing pesher identifications. The chief focus of this dissertation is the relationship between the citations and the interpretations, i.e., lemma/pesher correspondence in Pesher Nahum. By way of introduction, Part 1 of this work presents current thinking on the nature of Qumran pesher. We discuss form and content as determinative characteristics of the pesher genre, and address the relative significance of revelation and exegesis as the author's means of arriving at pesher. In Part 1, we also present the model of lemma/pesher correspondence that comprises the core of our thesis. Part 2 is an annotated edition and commentary of 4QpNah in which we implement an integrative approach stressing correspondence. We present a transcription and translation of the text, followed by textual analysis, discussion of the historical context of the text, and a literary investigation which demonstrates the exegetical, linguistic, and literary connection between the contemporizing content of the pesher and its biblical base-text. |
