| Summary | This research project examined the unique healthcare leadership relationship between independent physicians and a publicly funded health authority. An environment of continuous healthcare reform pressures leadership to create new and innovative methods for enhancing and sustaining services. In working with clinical department managers and medical directors of Alberta's Palliser Health Region (PHR), qualitative action research helped to examine the feasibility of implementing a shared medical director-manager leadership model. The literature review explored shared-leadership theory, healthcare structure and leadership, and organizational culture. Adhering to all relevant ethical considerations and standards, data were collected and recommendations developed through three successive focus groups sessions. Based on the research findings, the project concludes that shared-leadership for clinical departments is feasible. Additionally, the independent physician medical director and department manager participants are prepared to champion the development and implementation of a model for clinical departments of the region. | ||
