Summary "Researchers have made tremendous progress in identifying and describing the nature and phenomenology of perinatal anxiety. Symptoms of anxiety have been studied in relation to birth outcomes for more than 30 years, and diagnoses of perinatal anxiety disorders have been the subject of much empirical research particularly over the past decade. Various manifestations of perinatal anxiety are being linked with increasing frequency to the biological and psychological changes that accompany pregnancy and the postpartum period. Moreover, there is an increasingly large body of literature that identifies factors that have the potential to make women vulnerable to developing perinatal anxiety. Research pertaining to these and other related issues is brought together here in one volume for the first time. Whereas perinatal depression is a relatively straightforward condition to identify and define, perinatal anxiety is observed in many forms. Part I of this volume is geared toward the description of various manifestations of perinatal anxiety disorders and an evaluation of empirical research conducted to date. Part II of this volume focuses on the clinical implications of the many types of perinatal anxiety symptoms and disorders described in Part I. The Conclusion to the volume highlights important themes that emerge across chapters and proposes an agenda for future research"--Introduction.
